Young Stars That Stood Out On Matchday 5
March 28th, 2023
With the international break going on, the MLS action doesn't stop. Many top players left to represent their countries, opening the door for young players to fill the void and show what they can do. Here are three players that impressed on Matchday 5.
#7. Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty - 18 Years Old - Toronto FC - Toronto FC Academy (Transfer Value - $2.50M)
Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty was deemed the next Alphonso Davies because he's Canadian, he's a wingback, and he's good. Marshall-Rutty made his first appearance of the season for Toronto FC on Saturday against the San Jose Earthquakes. Being just 18 years old and having Richie Laryea (loanee from Nottingham Forest) in front of him, playing time might be hard to come by this season. Given the international call-ups, Marshall-Rutty got his first start and made a case for further playing time. He played all 90 minutes and had a 93% passing accuracy, showed a lot of skill with the ball and shut down Quakes forward Cade Cowell. Hopefully this performance gets his name higher up the team sheet with Bob Bradley and we'll be seeing more speed down that right side in Toronto.
Marshall-Rutty made his first appearance with the first team when he was just 15 years old. Ever since then he's been linked to clubs abroad. He's trained with some of the largest clubs in Europe during the 2022 offseason but as of now he continues to play at home with Toronto FC. I think Marshall-Rutty needs to establish himself as a starting XI player with Toronto before seeking a move abroad. His potential is sky high but an injury last year but him on the back foot with the club. Having consecutive good performances like Saturday will get Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty back on the path to becoming a regular and beyond.
#29. Noel Buck - 17 Years Old - New England Revolution - New England Revolution Academy (Transfer Value - $200K)
Unlike Marshall-Rutty, Noel Buck has started every game for the Revolution this season. In fact, New England started three teenage midfields this week and the trio did not disappoint. Buck led the way with solid box to box play and capping it off with the game winning goal. Buck is just 17 but he is already starting to settle into the Revs lineup. His hard work paid off when a corner fell to him right outside the box. Buck got a luckily deflection on his strike but props to the midfielder on keeping the ball low and hitting it hard. Right now Buck looks like a staple in this Eastern conference leading team. If his development keeps on the same trend, Noel Buck is going to be a star in the near future!
#17. Brian Gutiérrez - 19 Years Old - Chicago Fire FC - Chicago Fire Academy (Transfer Value - $2.00M)
Brian Gutiérrez is not a new name in Chicago, being just 19 years old. Gutiérrez played in 33 matches in 2022 and has started 3 so far this season with the Fire. He continues to make a case for being one of the best young midfielders in the league. "Guti" had 2 goals and 7 assists last season and he already has 2 assists this season...in 3 games. Gutiérrez was only credited with one assist this week against Inter Miami but the first goal was all Guti on the right side, putting the perfect ball across the box for Chris Mueller to bang home. Przybylko got the assist but the ball just grazed his foot on the way through. With the game tied going into extra time, Guti got the ball near the halfway line and made an excellent run all the way to the top of the box where he found Kei Kamara for the game winner. Making key passes like this is going to make Brian Gutiérrez a key player for the Chicago Fire this season.
